The thermooxidative degradation and thermal hydrolysis of poly(diphenylenephthalide), poly(diphenylene oxide phthalide), and poly(arylate) based on 4',4"-diphenylphthalide dicarboxylic acid and phenolphthalein were studied by gas chromatography and IR spectroscopy. The elimination of the major products of degradation (CO, CO2, 2-phenylanthraquinone, and 3-phenylfluorenone) was estimated quantitatively, and the possible schemes for the degradation of these polymers in the presence of oxygen and water were suggested. The hydrolytic stabilities of ester bonds in a lactone cycle and ester groups in the backbone were compared.
