Aromatic nitriles were alkylated with tetralkylgermane, tetraalkylstannane, and hexaalkyldistannane in the presence of catalytic amounts of mediators, such as phenanthrene and cyanoanthracenes via photo-induced electron transfer. The alkylation process concerned was examined by means of a radical clock probe.
