Traces of methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) and 1,2-dichloroethane and 1,2-dibromoethane from motor vehicle exhausts were identified in both estuarine water and sediment samples adjacent to motorways and centres of high urban road-traffic density. A modified purge-and-trap gas chromatographic method was used to identify these compounds at levels as low as 5 ng per litre. MTBE was completely separated from co-eluting compounds using a 50 m chemically bonded, non-polar fused-silica capillary column. Method performance was linear up to 300 ug per litre. Relative standard deviations were less than 3 per cent and 3.5 per cent, respectively, for 18 ng dihaloethanes per litre and 6 ng MTBE per litre.
