In order to investigate the explosion properties of aluminium/potassium chlorate (Al/KClO3) firework mixtures, underwater explosion test and air blast measurement were carried out.It was found that the explosion properties of these mixtures were strongly influenced by an aluminum content and a particle shape of aluminum. From the underwater explosion test, both shock and bubble energies of flake aluminum and potassium chlorate mixtures (Al(f)/KClO3) showed a maximum value at 25wt.% of aluminum content and the shock energy was estimated as 50% of that of TNT and the bubble energy was 130% of that of TNT. On the other hand the bubble energy of atomized aluminum and potassium chlorate mixtures (AZ(a)/KClO3) showed a maximum value at 50wt.% of aluminum content and it was estimated as 180% of that of TNT.From the air blast measurement, TNT equivalent of blast wave of Al(f)/KClO3 showed a maximum value at 20wt.% of aluminum content and the TNT equivalent was estimated as 60%. It was found that the TNT equivalent obtained by air blast measurement of Al/KClO3 mixtures showed a good correlation with the shock energies obtained by the underwater explosion of the same mixtures.
