The present work describes preliminary pharmacological screening of Salsola baryosma. Ethanol (80 %) extract (A) of the plant was suspended in water and sub-fractioned into n-hexane (B), EtOAc (C) and n-BuOH (D) soluble fractions. These fractions (1mg/ ml) showed 52 to 100 % phytotoxicity and showed 50 % cytotoxicity as determined by brine shrimp lethality assay. DPPH radical scavenging activity of fraction 'C' was 77% whilst other fractions had antioxidant activity below 57 %. When fraction 'A' was tested for antispasmodic activity, spontaneous contractions were recorded at 0.3-3.0 mg/ ml concentration in isolated rabbit jejunum preparations. It also inhibited K+ induced contractions to 70 % at 1-5 mg/ ml level, suggesting a calcium channel blockade activity.
