Abstract
The influence of the dynamic, static, and conjugated (i.e., static following by dynamic extraction) extraction modes, modifiers, and temperature in the supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) of peels of the hybrid Tangor murcote (Blanco) X Citrus sinensis (Osbeck) was investigated. A sequential extraction using different modifiers (hexane, ethyl ether, and acetone) added to supercritical CO2 was performed at two different temperatures (60 and 75°C). The major compounds were analyzed by capillary gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). Different chromatographic profiles were obtained when the nature of the modifier, the extraction modes, and the temperatures were changed, and the conjugated extraction mode at the higher temperature using ethyl ether as modifier for supercritical CO2 was shown to be the best technique to extract terpenes and sesquiterpenes. Six compounds were identified: β-mircene, 1,8-cineole, d-limonene, dihydrocarveole, geraniole, and caryophylene. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Micro Sep 10: 213-223, 1998.
