Abstract
A new series of mixed-ligand square planar complexes with donor-metal-acceptor (D-M-A) structure (D = pyridine, gamma -methylpyridine, 2,2 ' -bipyridine (bpy) or 1,10-phenanthroline (phen); M = Ni, Pd or Pt; A = maleonitriledithiolate or 4,5-dimercapto-1,3-dithiole-2-thionate) were designed and synthesized for the study of third order nonlinear optical property. The results indicate that complexes containing dmit (dmit = 4,5-dimercapto-1,3-dithiole-2-thionate) exhibit larger third-order optical nonlinearity (gamma (1111) in the order of 10(-31) esu) at 1064 nm than the other complexes. The excited-state enhancement of the third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility of the complex (Py)(2)Pt(mnt) (Py = pyridine, mnt = maleonitriledithiolate) was observed when the sample was optically pumped by either a picosecond or a nanosecond pump beam of wavelength of 355 nm.
