Abstract
It has recently been discovered that one ion exchange resin can combine two catalytic functions. This has the advantage that only one catalyst resin is needed in a reactor to perform two different steps in the synthesis. This increases the space-time yield appreciably. Two applications of such bifunctional catalysts are described in this article: olefin etherification to produce methyl t-butyl ether (MTBE) or t-amyl methyl ether (TAME); and emthyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK) synthesis from acetone.
