Non-aqueous synthesis of tin oxide nanocrystals and their assembly into ordered porous mesostructures was studied. The sols were prepared by reacting tin chloride with benzyl alcohol in a beaker without any subsequent solvothermal treatment. The assembly process involved the addition of the block copolymer to the nanoparticle sol in THF, transfer to a petri dish, and evaporation of the solvent under ambient conditions. The results show the formation of exceptionally high degree of ordering in terms of pore shape and 3D arrangement.
