Abstract
Plasticizers based on straight-chain molecular structure are discussed from technical and economic points of view. They have not established themselves as the successors to the workhorse phthalates such as DOP or DIDP as was predicted several years ago. Nor does it appear likely they will ever be classed as '%'general- purpose'%plasticizers. They captured a significant share of the market for low-temperature plasticizers, a share expected to amount to about 110 million lb in 1970. The initial success of the linear plasticizers has been based on their balance of properties, particularly their low-temperature properties and low volatility, and on prices that make them competitive with blends. The article includes a survey of new plants under construction which will boost the supply of linear alcohols to about 265 million lb by the end of 1971, making a basis for the mass production of cheap, low-temp, flexible, linear plasticizers.
