Abstract
Source-to-sink, sediment budgets, cold environments and global environmental change are defined and pioneering papers by JACKLI (1957) and RAPP (1960) considered in the light of these definitions. Distinctive cryospheric environments and their components are proposed as 'natural kinds, expected to respond to environmental change in distinctive ways. Errors involved in entitation and quantification are identified and the value of storage as a check on the order of magnitude of these errors is emphasized. Parallel source-to-sink and sediment budget studies are recommended not only to develop a library of base line conditions but also to provide greater confidence in estimates of future geomorphic scenarios.
