Abstract
After the first cases of bisphosphonate associated osteonecrosis of the jaw were published, a disease known as "phossy jaw" which was vanquished in the beginning of the 20th century, was again mentioned in the medical literature. Phosphorus necrosis or "phossy jaw" was first observed in 1839 and exclusively affected employees in the match-producing industry. Especially the scientists Geist and von Bibra helped understand the meaning and significance of this disease. Since the ban of white phosphorus in the matchproduction in 1906 phosphorus necrosis has essentially become a disease of the past. © Schattauer 2012.
