Charge-transfer polymerizations of N-vinylcarbazole (VCZ) initiated by electron acceptors have been the subject of numerous reports in recent years. However, the mechanism, especially the initiation mechanism of the thermally induced charge-transfer polymerization of VCZ in the presence of an organic electron acceptor, is still to be clarified. As an extension of our previous study on the polymerization of VCZ initiated by bromanil (BA) and chloranil (CA) in benzene, this paper describes the polymerization of VCZ with a series of p-quinoid compounds ranging widely in electron affinities in nitrobenzene, where a good correlation was found between the magnitude of the electron affinities of the structurally analogous electron acceptors and the effectiveness as a polymerization initiator. It was found that rapid polymerizations of VCZ were initiated by BA and CA in nitrobenzene at 30 C, whereas almost no polymerization occurred in benzene under comparable reaction conditions. The polymers obtained were white powders with the number-average mol. wt ranging from 6,200 to 12,600. Time-conversion curves of the polymerizations of VCZ initiated by these p-quinoid compounds in nitrobenzene at 30 C are given. Polymerization mechanisms possible are discussed.
