Abstract
While 3-(4-nitrophenyl ethenyl-E)-N-H indole is photochemically stable, and shows dramatically red-shifted solvatochromic fluorescence emission (λem 642 nm with λex 405 nm in acetonitrile), the corresponding p-aminophenyl derivative, 3-(4-amino phenyl ethenyl-E)-N-H indole undergoes photocyclodehydrogenation yielding a benzocarbazole photoproduct together with a moderately red-shifted fluorescence emission (λem 404/414 nm with λex 323 nm in acetonitrile).
