Manganese slag sludge generated by the electrolytic production of manganese metal craft is harmful to the environment and difficult to dispose. To solve the problem, two treatment agents, lime and sodium hydroxide, were used and their treatment effects and processing effect were compared. Finally, the toxicity of the treated manganese slag leachate was studied and the optimum operating conditions were determined. The result is that the major pollutants in manganese slag are water-soluble manganese (453 times higher than the standard) and ammonia-nitrogen (26 times higher than the standard). By selecting quicklime as treatment agents, the concentrations of manganese ions and ammonia emission in the treated manganese slag leaching solution are reduced over 99% and 97%, respectively. The concentration of water-soluble manganese ion after treatment is below 5 mg/L; ammonia-nitrogen concentration is below 25 mg/L, which can both meet the Integrated Wastewater Discharge Standard (GB8978-1996). The reaction process over 30 hours in unventilated and dark environment without rain is the optimum treatment condition.
