The fusion of a metal binding tag to the C terminus of barnase was shown to permit the stable incorporation into the resulting fusion protein of paramagnetic metal ions. These, in turn, allowed the authors to measure several long-range structural constraints based on paramagnetic effects and on partial orientation of the fusion protein in solution.
