Abstract
The effect of perchloric acid vapor on the different stages on the non-catalytic and catalytic decomposition and ignition of ammonium perchlorate (AP) were investigated. The extent of decomposition of AP was scarcely influenced by the presence of perchloric acid, and the decomposition stopped at about 25-28% conversion. The results obtained support the recent proposals for the chemistry of formation and growth of nuclei in AP decomposition. The accelerating effect of perchloric acid was attributed to the reactions of its decomposition products with AP.
