River Ramganga is an important tributary of the Ganga and is facing acute water pollution due to rapid industrialization at Moradabad, the fast growing brass city of India situated on the right bank of the river. The pollution of the river in a stretch of about 25 km around Moradabad has been studied. The pollution is caused by effluent wastes produced by nearly 450 electroplating units and entire brass and stainless steel industry, apart from the domestic wastewaters. Besides, the conventional pollution parameters, the qualitative as well as quantitative determination of heavy metals such as copper, lead, chromium, nickel, manganese and iron have been carried out from six sampling stations on the river Ramganga at Moradabad. The river at Moradabad manifests severe organic pollution and build-up of toxicants (heavy metals) particularly, the iron which has well exceeded its permissible limit. The river at Moradabad requires urgent quality management.
