The esterification of benzyl alcohol and acetic acid with different types of organotin compounds as catalysts was studied. The effects of factors such as the different types of organic tin catalysts, the amount of catalysts, reaction temperature, reaction time, molar ratio of acid to alcohol and the water-carrying agent were investigated in detail. The results showed that Ph 3SnCl exhibited excellent catalytic activity. When the dosage of the catalyst was 1.5% based on the total mass of benzyl alcohol and acetic acid, the molar ratio of acetic acid to benzyl alcohols was 2.5 : 1, the dosage of toluene was 10 mL (the molar ratio of toluene to benzyl alcohols 0.60), the reaction temperature was 110°C, and the reaction time was 120 min, the yield of benzyl acetate was 95.8%. The catalyst could be reused for five times without significant yield declining.
