Catalytic activity of inorganic salts CuSO4, CuCl2 · 2H2O, Cu(NO3) · 3H2O and FeCl3 · 6H2O in oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzoic acid with oxygen were studied with free-solvent. Effect of inorganic salt type, reaction time and catalyst dosage on yield of benzoic acid was investigated. Recycle of catalyst was observed and reaction mechanism was proposed. It is found that Cu(II) salts are more active with high yield of benzoic acid than Fe(III) salt. Under reaction conditions of benzyl alcohol 0.02 mol, mole ratio of CuSO4 to benzyl alcohol 0.082, NaOH 0.0250 mol and reaction time 90 min, yield of benzoic acid can mount to 98.4%. The reaction was environment friendly and no waste was produced during the process.
