Abstract
The authors summarize recent results from studies with English sole (Parophrys vetulus) from a number of sites in Puget Sound, Washington, and winter flounder (Pseudopleuronectes americanus) from several sites along the northeastern US coast. The emphasis of these studies has been to assess further the sensitivity of the postlabeling assay for detecting the presence of genotoxic compounds bound to DNA in livers of benthic fish from contaminated sites and evaluating which adducts arise from anthropogenic chemicals. The present results indicate that the 32P-postlabeling assay will be useful in environmental monitoring studies for assessing the extend of exposure of marine fish species to complex mixtures of genotoxic contaminants. Moreover, previous results showing that DNA-benzo(a)pyrene adducts persist in English sole after a single exposure to this carcinogenic PAH suggest that measurement of DNA adducts in wild fish populations may also provide valuable information on cumulative contaminant exposure.
