Abstract
The esterification reaction of adipic acid with benzyl alcohol, in the presence of toluene as solvent, with sulfuric acid catalyst, is investigated. The effect of different factors is studied and optimal conditions of combined synthesis of dibenzyl adipinate and ortho-methyldiphenylmethane ester are found. Their yields amount to 52 and 34% respectively in relation to the theoretical ones per reacting benzyl alcohol. It is established that the esterification reaction of adipic acid with benzyl alcohol takes place simultaneously in two competing reactions - esterification and condensation.
