Abstract
Hydrous sodium or potassium titanium and hydrous titanium/silicon oxides have been shown to be excellent precursors in the preparation of active hydrogenation and oxidation catalysts. This paper reports on the synthesis, scale-up from 1 to 100 g batches, characterization of Type 2 CT, a sodium aluminum titanate, and its use as a support for NiMo catalysts. Catalytic activity is determined by using the model reaction, hydrogenation of pyrene at 300°C. The source of aluminum and the concentration of aluminum in the synthesis does not affect the structure according to the XRD patterns. High initial surface areas are obtained, but on heating, the surface area rapidly decreases and at 600°C the XRD pattern corresponds to Na0.23TiO2, which would suggest that two phases have formed within the material, an Al2O3 and Na0.23TiO2. When the Type 2 CT is used as a precursor in preparing a supported, sulfided Ni/Mo catalyst, the activity is comparable to commercial catalysts on the basis of active metal.
