Abstract
The chemical stability of a generic clindamycin phosphate injection in intravenous admixtures (6 and 12 mg/mL in dextrose 5% and sodium chloride 0.9% injections) has been studied at 25°, 5° and -10°. Clindamycin concentrations were determined by liquid chromatography on day zero and five other study days at each temperature. Physical appearances and pH values were also determined on each day. Clindamycin retained greater than 90% of the initial concentration for at least 22 days at 25°, 54 days at 5° and 68 days at -10°. The pH values did not change throughout the study period and were within the maximum stability range. The concentration of benzyl alcohol (the preservative present in the injection) had decreased in all the samples probably due to adsorption onto the plastic bags, as is common with some other preservatives also, such as parabens. The loss of preservative may not be of any significance.
