Abstract
Pyrene (5g), dissolved in nitrobenzene (10~20ml), was stirred with conc. sulfuric acid (4 ml 3 times theoretical) for 1 hour at 40~50°C. 1-Pyrenesulfonic acid thus formed was filtered off and washed with benzene and then with conc. hydrochloric acid. The yield of the crude acid was almost theoretical. The acid monohydrate (mp 118~419°C) and the anhydrous acid (mp 182~184°C [with decompn.]) was obtained by reprecipitation from aqueous solution with conc. hydrochloric acid and by recrystallization from methylene chloride, respectively. © 1975, The Society of Synthetic Organic Chemistry, Japan.
