Persea americana belongs to the family of Lauraceae and it is well known in Nigerian traditional medicine for its traditional uses. The present investigation was carried out to determine the possible bioactive components of n-hexane extract of P. americana fruit peel using GC-MS analysis. Fifteen (15) components from P. americana fruit peel were identified. The prominent components in the n-Hexane extract of the fruit peel were caryophyllene,1H-cyclopropa[a] naphthalene, 2,3,5-trimethyl-1,4-benzenediol, caryophyllene oxide, dibutylphthalate, n-hexadecanoic acid, oleic acid, cis-13-octadecen-1-yl-acetate, dodecane-2,6,11-trimethyl,Bis(2-ethylhexyl)phthaltate,(1R,3E,7E,11R)-1,5,5,8-Tetramethyl(-12-oxabicyclo[9.1.0] dodeca-3,7-diene, and (1R,9R,E)-4,11,11-trimethyl-8-methylenebicyclo[7.2.0] undec-4-ene. The presence of various bioactive compounds confirms the application of P. americana for various ailments by traditional practitioners. However, bioassay-guided isolation and characterization of the individual phytocompound should be carried out in order to find a novel drug or lead compound(s). © 2020 Okezu et al.
