Abstract
The versatility of manganese metalloporphyrin complexes as small molecule models for metalloenzymes was extended as a chemical example of processive catalysts. In comparison to naturally processive enzymes, these synthetic analogues are much less sophisticated in structure. Nonetheless, they demonstrate the ability of simple molecular systems to perform efficient catalytic reactions along a polymer chain. Further development of this approach may lead to new methods for modifying polymers to generate new functionality and properties. More challenging goals include coupling information transfer as reactions occur along an encoded polymer chain.
