Technical Report
"Mechanical Timber Joints,"
"Whale, LRJ; Smith, I"
1986

"A description is given of research on laterally loaded timber joints. Emphasis was placed on derivation of reliable short-term materials data suitable as input to previously developed analytical models for lateral load-deformation responses in nailed or bolted joints. Materials tests consisted of British grown softwoods, tropical hardwoods and a range of sizes of wire nails and black bolts. These tests extended to approximately three thousand specimens, the results from which are included in the report. Additionally, over three hundred complete joint assemblies were tested to verify the predictive ability of the analytical models. A review of previous work on timber joints subjected to longer-term loadings and a pilot investigation on bolted joints were used to plan further work in the area. (Copyright (c) TRADA 1986.)"
