Abstract
Conversion coatings for magnesium have been used for a number of applications such as paint bases and as stand-alone protection against atmospheric tarnishing among others. Although such coatings exhibit excellent performance, recently their application began to deteriorate as environmental pressures to eliminate hexavalent chromium, the base of such coatings became prevalent. This has been further triggered by the rapid growth of magnesium die casting applications in the automotive industry. In view of this, a chromate-free conversion coating process using a phosphate-permanganate bath has been developed. The coating has also been proven to be excellent as a paint-base treatment for magnesium-aluminum alloy die casting.
