Isopropanol is used as a chemical intermediate for compounds, e.g., methyl isobutyl carbinol, methyl isobutyl ketone, and isopropyl acetate. A typical indirect propylene-hydration process for the production of isopropanol involves reacting refinery-grade propylene with H2SO4 to form isopropyl alcohol sulfates, which are then reacted with H2O to form isopropanol. The total operating cost estimated to produce isopropanol was about $1480/ton of isopropanol in the 1Q of 2014 based on a plant constructed in the US, with capacity to produce 200,000 metric ton/yr of isopropanol.
