Abstract
The merits and limitations of an established in vivo method to evaluate anti human lymphocytes sera are reviewed. The described ''monkey test'' has contributed substantially to the standardization of human ALG and improvement of its production methods. Furthermore, selection of in vitro methods to monitor immunosuppressive potential has also been based on correlations with results obtained in the monkey test. In spite of current availability of increasingly reliable in vitro methods, in vivo testing of ALG before clinical application is still advisable as a safeguard against toxicity and to ensure immunosuppressive efficacy. International standardization of the in vivo and in vitro tests is recommended. (Journal received: July 28, 1975)
