The growth of single crystals of 1, 3-dinitrobenzene (1, 3-DNB), an organic nonlinear optical material is reported. Good optical quality single crystals were grown by vertical Bridgman technique (VBT) with modified ultra smooth vibration free translation setup. The grown crystals were characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD), FT-IR and optical transmission studies. Thermal studies confirm that the title compound has a fairly high thermal stability when compared with other members of dinitrobenzene family. The second harmonic generation (SHG) property was tested by Kurtz-Perry powder technique and the results of these experiments are discussed. Hyperpolarizability and HOMO-LUMO analysis of 1, 3-DNB were performed with the help of Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations using Gaussian 03 software. © Research India Publications.
