Shell Chemicals is planning to boost capacity for isopropyl alcohol (IPA) at its Pernis, Netherlands, site by 50,000 ton/yr by the second quarter of 2006. The additional production is intended to improve significantly the overall efficiency of the unit, which currently has a capacity of around 250,000 ton/yr. Shell produces IPA in Europe at Pernis and Berre, France; in North America at Deer Park, TX, and Sarnia, Canada; and in Singapore on Bukom Island, where it operates a 70,000 ton/yr plant. The Deer Park unit was revamped in 2002-2003 at a cost of some $40 million to boost IPA and methyl isobutyl ketone capacity, adding 25,000 ton/yr of capacity. Production of IPA at the site hit an all-time record of 45,000 ton in the third quarter of 2004.
