Abstract
The recognition that gases are generated in, and fluids circulate through seabed sediments has implications for the understanding of sediment dynamics, marine biological productivity, mineral cycles, the CO2 budget, ferro-manganese nodule formation and carbonate formation. Seabed pockmarks are described and their mode of formation explained from studies in the North Sea and elsewhere. Pockmarks contain a dense and varied fauna as well as methane-generated carbonate cements, and these are compared with seabed seepages in other marine geological contexts. -after Authors
