A numerical study of the X-LES hybrid turbulence model

Numerical simulations are carried out to study the behavior of the X-LES hybrid turbulence model. The model, that is based on the κ - ω - TNT turbulence model, has been recently introduced into the EZNSS code. The model has been validated using the classical test case of the three-dimensional flow about an infinite cylinder. The results show an excellent agreement with the measured surface coefficient and a good agreement with the measured skin friction coefficient. The model has been also applied to simulate the flow about an ogive-cylinder at incidence. These results were also favorably compared with experimental results. The X-LES model can well resolve the problem of over production in the vortex core, a deficiency that is exhibited by common RANS turbulence models.
