The antioxidant activity of the water and methanolic extracts obtained from the aerial parts of Carduus nutans L. (Asteraceae) as well as hexane, chloroform, ethylacetate, n-butanol and remaining water fractions of the later extract have been investigated. For the antioxidant activity assessment, effects of the extracts and fractions on superoxide anion radical (O2*-) generated by a HPX-XOD system and the stable free radical DPPH were studied. Methanol extract, and chloroform and ethylacetate fractions showed a potent free radical scavenging activity, while ethylacetate and butanol fractions showed significant SOD-like activity.
