The reactivity of TNT (trinitrotoluene) with sodium carbonate was investigated using thermal analysis (DSC) and heating tests. The results of DSC showed the TNT decomposition temperature falls almost 100 degrees when the same amount of anhydrous sodium carbonate was added. Furthermore, a mixture of TNT and sodium carbonate monohydrate began to decompose at about 105°C at which sodium carbonate monohydrate begins to release crystal water. From the results of heating tests, it was found that TNT vigorously reacted with sodium carbonate at above 100°C in the presence of water and formed black solid product, which ignited immediately when strong acid was.
