Abstract
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulatory considerations about the edible oil extraction solvents are discussed. It is found that extracting solvents used in food manufacturing such as n-hexane or isohexane/hexane isomers is labeled as food additives. The GRAS affirmation and FEMA GRAS (independent third-party determination) and GRAS self-determination are considered by users of solvents for extraction of edible oil. The GRAS notification and FDA's response to the notifiers are also elborated.
