Abstract
The present paper indicates that, based on the analysis of the maximum permissible emissions (MPE) assessment summary for Krasnoyarsk city, the furnaces and boilers of the private housing have the dominant negative impact on the city's atmosphere with benz(a)pyrene being the most prominent harmful substance. Siberian Coal and Energy Company (SUEK) was the first in Russia to produce smokeless fuel briquettes for domestic use. A pilot lignite processing plant capable of producing up to 30 ktpa of smokeless fuel briquettes had been constructed on the premises of the industrial boiler plant at the Berezovskiy open cast mine. The testing of the briquettes in a domestic boiler has revealed that the negative impact from burning thereof is reduced 30-fold as compared to coal and by an order of magnitude as compared to firewood. In March 2019 in Krasnoyarsk, a large-scale fortnightlong experiment had been conducted as follows. The traditional solid fuels had been replaced with smokeless briquettes in more than 9300 private households (those comprise approximately 70% of private housing in Krasnoyarsk), whereas several mobile laboratories had been monitoring the air quality and have registered a many-fold reduction of the air pollution levels. © 2020 Ugol' Journal Edition, LLC.
