The encapsulation and stability of beta-Carotene in single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) were investigated. Three types of SWCNTs were prepared by laser vaporization of carbon rods doped with Co/Ni in an Ar atmosphere, high-pressure CO SWCNTs, and purified HiPCo tubes. Beta-carotene was dissolved in hexane and annealed SWCNTs were added to the solution for the encapsulation. The refluxed solution was filtered and washed with tetrahydrofuran (THF) to obtain a sheet of SWCNT paper. The process was repeated three times to remove beta-carotene attached to the tube walls. Raman scattering showed the encapsulation of organic molecules inside the tubes.
