2, 2-bis(3-phenyl-4-hydroxyphenyl)propane (bisOPP-A) is a new type of monomer used mainly in the synthesis of high molecular polymers, such as polycarbonate, epoxy resin, polyester, etc, and it is also used for polymer modification. Now the bisOPP-A was synthesized from o-phenyl phenol (OPP) and acetone by using p-toluene sulfuric acid as main catalyst and mercaptoacetic acid as promoter. The effects of the reaction temperature, the dosages of p-toluene sulfuric acid and mercaptoacetic acid, the molar ratio of OPP to acetone on the yield of bisOPP-A were studied by means of orthogonal test. Using the range analysis, the optimum conditions were found as follows: molar ratio of OPP to acetone is 4:1, dosage of p-toluene sulfuric acid is 12%(wt), dosage of mercaptoacetic acid is 6%(wt), reaction temperature is 60°C and reaction time is 10 h; And the bisOPP-A yield of 62.8% can be achieved under above conditions. Pure bisOPP-A (purity>99.3%, melting point 112.7 113.7°C) can be obtained when crude bisOPP-A is recrystallized in the mixed solvent of toluene and n-hexane with vacuum drying. The structure of obtained bisOPP-A was characterized by elemental analysis, IR, 1H-NMR and MS.
