Abstract
The aim of the present study was to investigate the antimicrobial properties of Indian 9 species of marine biofouling ascidian animals. The organic solvents (methanol, methylene chloride and hexane) extracts from the Indian species of marine ascidian animals were tested against Alcaligenes, P. vulgaris, V. parahaemolyticus, P. aeruginosa and K. pneumoniae by agar well diffusion method. The results showed promising antibacterial activity against the tested microorganisms. Among these, crude extract of methylene chloride extracts were found to possess a more potent inhibitory effect (100%) for Proteus sp and 91.6% for Pseudomonas sp when compared to methanol and hexane extracts. Comparisons of available commercial drugs with different extracts were also carried out. From the preliminary screenings of Indian 9 ascidians species, all ascidians possessed antibacterial activities to most of the microorganisms. Ascidians, Microscosmus exasperatus, Aplidium indicum and Ascidia sydneiensis (test & mantle) showed maximum 20 - 28mm zones of clearance to Proteus and Pseudomonas sp. But Alcaligenes showed resistance to most of all ascidian extracts. Column chromatographic fractions of ascidian species showed scatted antibacterial activity to most fractions. The result of this study validates the use of methyl chloride and methanol extracts of these unidentified ascidian species of Indian waters, favoring the isolation of antibacterial agents.
