The covalent functionalization of carbon nanohorns (CNH) with 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of azomethine ylides was investigated. It was found that the repetitive centrifugation-filtration-solubilization cyclic treatment on the 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reaction of azo-methine ylides with CNH is crucial for obtaining functionalized nanohorns of the highest purity. It was observed that the UV/Vis-near-infrared (NIR) electronic absorption spectrum of functionalized nanohorns exhibits a broad band, which monotonically decreases as the NIR region is reached. However, characteristic transitions of pyrene-functionalized nanohorns were shown using the UV/Vis-NIR spectrum due to the presence of the chromophore in the region between 200-400 nm.
