The hydrolysis equilibria of the neodymium(III) ion have been studied in 3 m (Li)ClO4 ionic medium at 60°C by electrometric measurements with a glass electrode. The neodymium(III) concentration ranged from 0.03 to 1 m, whereas the acidity was decreased, with coulometrically generated OH- ions, down to the incipient precipitation of neodymium(III) hydroxide. This occurred when less than 2% of the metal ion was transformed into reaction products. The species Nd(OH)2+, Nd2(OH)24+ and Nd6(OH)126+ were assumed in dilute solutions, ≤ 0.3 m NdIII. At higher concentrations the data were best explained by replacing Nd6(OH)126+ with Nd6(OH)810+. Formation constants in the inert 3 m LiClO4 medium are reported. © 1989.
