Abstract
The action of aqueous inorganic hypochlorite on several benzyl alcohols has been studied. Benzaldehyde and o-methoxy-benzaldehyde were thus obtained in good yield from their respective alcohols. Under the conditions employed there was no evidence of reaction between the hypochlorite and these aldehydes. o-Hydroxybenzyl alcohol, under identical conditions, provided no aromatic aldehyde but was chlorinated in the nucleus with a concurrent elimination of formaldehyde. Possible mechanisms are considered. © 1961, American Chemical Society. All rights reserved.
