Esterification and amidation of carboxylic acid groups with carbodiimides as condensing agents have found widespread use for the synthesis of peptides, nucleotides, and polynucleotides. The application of carbodiimides for the esterification and amidation of poly(carboxylic acids) of the vinyl or other common synthetic types of polymers appears to have been rarely studied, however. In this preliminary study, the compositional sequences of copolymers resulting from partial esterification of syndiotactic poly(methacrylic acid) (s-PMMA) with dicyclohexylcarbodiimide (DCC) and methanol, benzyl alcohol, or 2,2,2-trifluoroethanol are studied by **1H-NMR spectroscopy. NMR spectra obtained in this study are included and evaluated in terms of reaction mechanisms and molecular structure of copolymers obtained.
