Abstract
In order to clarify the coking mechanism of coal, the abilities of coal as the hydrogen donor and acceptor were assessed by nuclear magnetic resonance and gas chromatography. Using sulfur as a hydrogen acceptor, it was found that the amount of transferable hydrogen for lower rank coal is larger than that for higher rank coal. On the other hand, when anthracene was used as a hydrogen acceptor, the amount of transferable hydrogen showed a maximum at about 87% carbon content. In checking the hydrogen acceptor abilities of coal, 9,10-dihydroanthracene was used as a hydrogen donor. It was found that lower ranks of coal have higher hydrogen acceptor abilities than higher ranks of coal. On the basis of the information about hydrogen transfer and free radicals thus obtained, modification of coal has been attempted.
