Abstract
1. The preliminary methylation of both isolated lignins and lignin in wood on the benzyl alcohol groups leads to a reduction of the degradative action of an alcoholic solution of nitric acid on the lignin macromolecule. 2. In the nitration of methylated lignins part of the newly introduced methoxy groups are eliminated. 3. The nitrolignins obtained after the nitration of methylated wood flour are close in composition to the nitrolignins isolated from ordinary fir sawdust. The same applies to the nitrolignins obtained in the nitration of isolated lignins. © 1969 Consultants Bureau.
