1. Determination of the molecular weights (MW) confirm the earlier conclusion of destruction of lignin not isolated from wood during its nitration with a solution of HNO3 in ethanol. Isolated lignins also undergo the same conversion during analogous treatment. This conclusion pertains both to the usual preparations and to preparations subjected to preliminary methylation at the benzyl alcohol groups. 2. During several successive nitrations of one portion of spruce shavings under the conditions of the Kürschner method there is a successive increase in the MW of the nitrolignins as the wood is delignified. Two fractions are distinctly isolated: I) with MW ∼1500, which comprises from 33 to 42% of the total isolated nitrolignin in various experiments, and II) with MW ∼3000. © 1970 Consultants Bureau.
