Abstract
Five known compounds - chrysophanol (1), physcion (2), emodin (3), cassiollin (4) and luteolin 5,3'-dimethyl ether (5) were isolated from the hexane and chloroform-soluble fractions of the methanolic extract of Cassia occidentalis. Among them, luteolin 5,3'-dimethyl ether was isolated for the first time from this plant. The structures of these compounds were confirmed on the basis of 2D-NMR studies, which also led to the revised assignment of the 1H NMR spectrum of cassiollin. Biological tests showed that cassiollin slightly inhibited the release of β-glucuronidase and lysozyme from neutrophils. On the other hand, cassiollin moderately inhibited the platelet aggregation induced by collagen.
